Gas Top-Ups

If your aircon is blowing warm air, icing up or taking longer to cool, a refrigerant top-up may help, but only where leak checks and system condition allow. Aircon Warehouse handles gas top-ups for wall splits, cassettes and selected portable units in Mbombela, the Lowveld and North West.

When a gas top-up makes sense

A refrigerant top-up is not a quick fix for every cooling problem. We only recommend it after checking for leaks, blocked coils, poor airflow, faulty fan operation and general system condition. If the system has lost gas because of a leak, topping up without finding the cause can lead to the same fault returning in a few days or weeks.

In Mbombela, White River, Hazyview, Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Rustenburg, we see a lot of units that struggle after heavy summer use, dust build-up and power cuts. Signs that the system may need attention include weak cooling, longer run times, hissing sounds, frozen pipes, short cycling and higher electricity use. We check the full picture before any refrigerant is added.

What the service includes

Our gas top-up service is carried out on site where practical, with the aim of restoring correct operating conditions safely and properly. The visit includes inspection, leak check, pressure assessment and a controlled refrigerant top-up if the unit is suitable. We also look at filters, indoor coil condition, outdoor coil condition and airflow around the unit.

  • Visual inspection of indoor and outdoor components
  • Basic leak detection and system pressure checks
  • Refrigerant top-up where the unit is serviceable
  • Performance test after charging
  • Advice on cleaning, servicing or repair if needed

If the system shows signs of a major leak, compressor fault or electrical problem, we will not just add gas and walk away. In those cases, we explain the next step clearly so you can decide on a repair or replacement unit.

Our step by step process

We keep the process straightforward so you know what is happening at each stage. The technician starts with a site assessment and confirms the unit type, capacity and symptoms. Once the system is isolated and checked, we verify whether the refrigerant level is low and whether there are any visible or testable leaks.

  1. Book your callout by email or through the warehouse team
  2. We confirm the unit type, location and problem symptoms
  3. A technician attends site and checks system condition
  4. Leak signs, pressure readings and airflow are assessed
  5. If suitable, refrigerant is topped up to the required level
  6. The system is tested for cooling performance and stability

For some units, especially older systems or units exposed to coastal humidity, dust or vibration, we may recommend a fuller service at the same visit. That helps reduce repeat faults and keeps the machine running better for longer.

Turnaround for homes, shops and offices

Turnaround depends on stock, location and how urgent the fault is. In Mbombela and nearby areas such as White River and Hazyview, we often schedule same day or next day site attendance when the diary allows. For Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Rustenburg, lead times depend on route planning and the size of the job.

Simple gas top-ups on standard wall splits are usually quicker than more complex jobs involving deep leaks or access challenges on high ceilings. Cassette units in offices, clinics and retail spaces can take longer because access, panels and ceiling space need to be managed carefully. If a follow-up repair is required, we will give you a realistic time line, not a vague promise.

We also work around business hours where possible. For offices and shops, we can often attend early morning or after trade hours to limit disruption. Where load-shedding affects testing, we plan the visit so that we can still verify operation properly once power is available.

Pricing approach and what affects the cost

We quote based on the unit type, the amount of refrigerant needed, the access conditions and whether a leak check or repair is required. A straightforward top-up on a domestic split unit will not cost the same as a larger cassette system in a commercial building. That is why we avoid fixed pricing that does not match the actual job.

  • Unit size and refrigerant type
  • Distance from our Mbombela base or North West route
  • Easy or difficult access to the indoor and outdoor units
  • Need for leak tracing, electrical checks or cleaning
  • After-hours or priority attendance if arranged

Where possible, we will tell you upfront if the cost of repeated top-ups suggests a deeper fault. In some cases, a repair or replacement unit is the better spend over time. We would rather give practical advice than keep charging for the same problem.

How often top-ups should be needed

A healthy aircon should not need frequent gas top-ups. If a system needs refrigerant more than once, there is usually an underlying issue that must be found. For most domestic wall splits, we expect gas loss to be minimal if the pipework and joints are sound. Commercial units and older systems may need closer monitoring, especially after long service periods or when the equipment has been moved.

As a general rule, include refrigerant checks during annual servicing for units running daily, especially in offices, salons, guesthouses and busy homes. In the Lowveld, where units work hard through hot months, a 6 to 12 month service interval is sensible. In dusty parts of the North West, filter and coil cleaning may be needed more often. If the unit is used in a coastal or high humidity environment, corrosion and moisture can also affect performance, so regular checks matter.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Can you just top up the gas if my unit is not cooling well?

Only if the system is suitable and the checks show that a top-up is the right step. If there is a leak, blocked airflow or an electrical fault, we will explain that first.

How do I know if my aircon needs refrigerant?

Common signs are weak cooling, ice on the pipes, longer running time and warm air from the indoor unit. A proper check is still needed because these symptoms can also point to other faults.

Do you handle business premises as well as homes?

Yes. We work on homes, shops, offices and light commercial sites across Mbombela and North West, including split units and cassette systems.
