Surge Protection Kit

A surge protection kit helps guard an air-conditioner against voltage spikes, brownouts and sudden return of power after load-shedding. It is a practical add-on for homes, shops and offices in Mbombela, the Lowveld and North West where supply can be uneven.

What this surge protection kit does

This kit is fitted on the electrical supply to an air-conditioner so the unit has a better chance of surviving short spikes and unstable power. It is not there to replace proper earthing or correct cable sizing. It works alongside a neat installation, the right breaker and sound workmanship. In areas where power drops off and comes back hard, that extra protection can save the compressor, control board and contactor from a costly fault.

It is used on wall split systems, cassette units and some portable units where the electrical plug or feed arrangement allows it. For businesses, it is especially useful where several units start after load-shedding or where municipal supply is known to fluctuate. A small protector can be the difference between a normal restart and a callout for burnt boards, which is never fun.

Where it suits best in the Lowveld and North West

This accessory suits homes, guest houses, clinics, retail shops and small offices in Mbombela, White River, Hazyview, Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Rustenburg. It is also a good fit for coastal and humid conditions in the wider Lowveld where electrical parts can age faster if moisture and dust build up inside a ceiling or distribution board. In commercial spaces, it helps protect units that are left running for long hours or switched on and off through the day.

It is worth considering where power is inconsistent, where generators are used, or where a site has frequent tripping. If the aircon is installed in a ceiling void, back room or high wall position, a protector gives an added layer of control. It does not fix wiring faults, but it does help with the kind of sudden electrical hits that cause expensive damage.

  • Suitable for unstable municipal supply and load-shedding recovery
  • Useful on single units and grouped installations
  • Helps protect inverter and non-inverter aircons alike
  • Good choice for offices, bedrooms, shops and reception areas

Sizes, ratings and common options

We supply surge protection kits in options matched to the size and electrical draw of the air-conditioner. A small wall split may need a lighter-duty protector, while a larger cassette or multi-room setup may call for a higher-rated unit. The correct choice depends on the voltage supply, current draw and whether the installation is single phase. If the rating is too low, it may trip too often. If it is too high, it may not react quickly enough to protect the equipment.

Typical options cover compact domestic units, medium-duty commercial units and heavier-duty protection for larger systems. Some kits are hard-wired near the isolator or breaker, while others are fitted in line at the point of supply. We check the application before supply so the protector matches the unit, the cable size and the site layout. That way the installation stays tidy and the protector can do its job properly.

  • Voltage protection range matched to local supply conditions
  • Options for 220 V to 240 V single-phase air-conditioning circuits
  • Compact housings for neat mounting near the indoor or outdoor point of supply
  • Models with delay function for restart after power returns

Installation, power needs and commissioning

Installation should be done by a qualified air-conditioning or electrical technician. The protector needs to be wired into a correct circuit with proper isolation, the right breaker size and sound earthing. On a new install, it is best fitted at the same time as the unit so the system is protected from day one. On an older system, we can fit it during a service or replacement job if the electrical layout allows it.

There is no gas requirement for the protector itself, since it is an electrical accessory and not part of the refrigeration circuit. But if we are installing it on a split system that has had a long run without service, we will usually check operating pressures, line set condition and general system health at the same time. That way, the aircon is not just protected electrically, it is working within the right limits too. A protector can not save a system with a major refrigerant leak, so the whole setup must be sound.

After fitting, the unit should be commissioned and tested through a power interruption where possible. We check start-up delay, trip response and whether the system restarts cleanly after supply returns. If the site uses a generator, inverter or changeover arrangement, tell us upfront so the protector is set up for the actual supply pattern.

Care, servicing and when to replace it

A surge protection kit needs very little attention, but it should be checked during scheduled servicing. Dust, heat and vibration can shorten the life of electrical accessories, especially in plant rooms, roof spaces and shop ceilings. If the protector has a visible fault light, repeated trips or a delayed response after a power cut, it should be inspected. In some cases the unit will still work, but not at the level needed for proper protection.

We recommend checking the protector whenever the aircon is deep cleaned, fault found or serviced after a major electrical event. If the building has had lightning nearby, repeated outages or a breaker issue, have the whole circuit tested. A protector is a consumable item in the sense that it can wear out after taking hits. It is better to replace it before it fails than after a compressor board has already gone. That sort of thing gets expensive fast.

  • Keep the area around the electrical point clean and dry
  • Have the unit checked after lightning, brownouts or repeated outages
  • Replace faulty indicators or damaged housings promptly
  • Include the protector in annual service checks

What to check before ordering

Before you order, have the air-conditioner model, electrical rating and installation type ready. We will want to know whether it is a wall split, cassette or portable unit, and whether it is installed in a home, shop or office. The cable run, breaker size and supply voltage matter as well. If you are unsure, send us the unit details and we will help match the correct protector to the application. It saves time and avoids the wrong size being supplied.

Please also tell us if the site is in Mbombela, White River, Hazyview, Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom or Rustenburg, as that helps us plan delivery or installation support. For trade buyers, we can work with site assessments, replacement units and scheduled servicing at the same time. If the aircon is already tripping, mention that too so we know to check the existing protection and wiring before fitment. A short note from the client often makes the job smoother, nogal in older buildings where the electrical board has had a few changes over the years.

For trade pricing and supply, contact us with your unit details and site location. We stock for practical use, not guesswork, and we prefer to match the right protector first time.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Will this kit stop damage from every power problem?

No. It helps with spikes, dips and power return surges, but it cannot fix bad wiring, poor earthing or a failed compressor. It is one part of proper protection.

Can it be fitted to an existing air-conditioner?

Yes, in many cases it can. The circuit must be checked first so the protector is matched to the unit and the existing wiring is safe.

Do I need gas top-up or servicing to install it?

Not for the protector itself. It is an electrical accessory. If the aircon also needs servicing, leak checking or gas work, we can look at that during the same visit.
