Portable Hire Unit

A portable hire unit gives short term cooling where a fixed system is not the answer. It suits events, temporary offices, plant rooms and homes needing cover during repairs or the hottest weeks.

Short term cooling when a fixed unit will not do

Our portable hire unit range is for customers who need cooling quickly and without waiting for a full installation. These units are used for a few days, a few weeks, or over a hotter season when a room, tent, office, clinic or temporary work area needs relief from heat. They are practical for breakdown cover, tenant handovers and events where people cannot sit through a warm afternoon.

A portable unit is free standing and can be moved into position with far less disruption than a permanent split system. Most units use a flexible exhaust duct to send warm air out through a window, door gap or temporary opening. That makes them useful in Mbombela, White River, Hazyview and across the North West where fast cooling matters during load shedding and high daytime temperatures.

We keep the focus on proper cooling, sensible power use and easy setup. If you need something for a weekend function or for a site that is still changing layout, this is often the simplest option.

Sizes and options for different room loads

Portable hire units come in different cooling capacities so the unit can match the room size and heat load. A small office or consultation room needs a very different output from a marquee kitchen or a busy temporary control room. We help you choose by looking at floor area, window exposure, number of people inside and the amount of equipment running.

  • Small units for rooms of about 15 to 25 m²
  • Medium units for rooms of about 25 to 40 m²
  • Larger portable units for about 40 to 60 m² where heat load is higher
  • Single hose or dual hose setup depending on the room and ventilation
  • Optional drain management for continuous run periods
  • Casters and handles for moving the unit between spaces

Specs are confirmed at order stage because the right choice depends on insulation, glass area and how often doors open. A 30 m² meeting room in Potchefstroom, for example, may need a different unit from a shaded room of the same size in Mbombela where humidity is higher, and the air feels heavier.

Where portable hire units work best

These units suit situations where cooling is needed fast and the space may not stay the same for long. They are common for temporary offices, school admin rooms, site cabins, church events, medical screening areas and retail spaces during a fixed system failure. They also help when a new split unit is still on order or a compressor has failed and the customer needs a bridge solution.

They work best in enclosed or partly enclosed spaces where the duct can vent hot air outside. If the room has large open doors, strong sun on one side or heavy kitchen heat, the unit may still cool but it will work harder. In those cases we may recommend a larger model or more than one unit, especially for event use in Rustenburg or Klerksdorp where afternoon heat can build fast.

For coastal air is not the issue here, but dust and heat are. In the Lowveld, high humidity can make a room feel warmer than the thermometer suggests. A correctly sized portable unit helps pull that sticky feeling down without a full build in the ceiling.

Power supply, ducting and setup needs

Most portable hire units run on standard single phase power and need a proper plug point on a circuit that can carry the starting load. Before delivery we check the supply, cable routing and where the exhaust will discharge. If the room already has load shedding backup, we can advise whether the generator or inverter setup will carry the unit, or if it should run only on municipal supply. A weak supply can trip, so it is worth checking before the hire starts.

Setup normally includes placing the unit level, fitting the exhaust duct and sealing gaps around the vent as far as practical. The better the hot air is expelled, the harder the unit can focus on cooling inside. If there is a condenser drain or condensate bottle, that also needs to be checked during the hire period. For some sites we can assist with commissioning and a brief handover so staff know how to operate the controls.

  • Single phase power point preferred on a dedicated circuit
  • Clear path for warm air exhaust through window or wall opening
  • Level floor space with enough room for air intake and airflow
  • Access for emptying condensate or connecting a drain line
  • Backup power check if the unit must run during outages

Care during hire and what servicing looks like

Portable units need regular attention during hire, especially if they run for long hours. Filters should stay clean so air can pass through freely and the unit does not ice up. The exhaust duct should stay connected and not kinked. If the condensate tray fills up, the unit may stop or reduce performance, so it is important to empty or drain it as required. A unit in a dusty warehouse near Klerksdorp or near an open venue can need more frequent filter checks than one in a closed office.

We offer scheduled servicing, fault finding, gas top ups where applicable, and deep cleaning for equipment in regular use. Portable units that are rented often benefit from a clean between jobs, especially if they have been used in smoky, dusty or high occupancy spaces. If a unit is not cooling properly, strange noise is coming from the fan, or the airflow has dropped, contact us early rather than forcing it to run all day.

Good care makes the unit last longer and keeps the hire period trouble free. It also helps the room stay comfortable without wasting power.

What to confirm before placing an order

To supply the right portable hire unit, we need a few practical details up front. This avoids under sizing and saves time on site. A clear room description is better than a rough guess because ceiling height, sun load and occupancy can change the result a lot.

  • Room size in metres squared and ceiling height if known
  • Type of space, such as office, event tent, shop or temporary cabin
  • How many people will be inside at the busiest time
  • Whether there is single phase power, generator power or inverter backup
  • Where the warm air can be vented out
  • How long the hire is needed for and whether delivery is to Mbombela, White River, Hazyview, Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom or Rustenburg

We also ask whether the unit is for breakdown cover or planned use. That helps us prepare the right equipment and keep the handover simple. If you are unsure, send the room details and the use case and we will advise on the best option before anything is dispatched.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Can a portable hire unit run during load shedding?

Only if the backup power source can carry the starting load and ongoing draw. We check that before supply and advise if the unit is better used on municipal power or a generator.

How long does setup take?

Most units can be placed and running quickly once the vent path and power point are ready. The time mainly depends on access, ducting and whether the site needs sealing around the exhaust.

What happens if the unit stops cooling properly?

Check the filters, condensate drain and duct first, then contact us for fault finding. If needed we can inspect, service or replace the unit during the hire period.
