Stilfontein Hall Cooling

A large community hall in Stilfontein needed cooling that could cope with quiet weekday use and packed event nights. We supplied larger wall split units, handled fitment and commissioning, and set the system up for dependable use through North West heat and load-shedding.

What the hall needed from the start

The brief came from a community hall in Stilfontein that hosts meetings, funerals, prize givings and weekend functions. The room size and changing crowd numbers meant the cooling could not be treated like a small office job. It had to work for light daytime use, then still pull its weight when the hall filled up fast and doors were opening and closing all evening.

The client wanted practical advice, not guesswork. We assessed the hall layout, ceiling height, heat gain from people and lighting, and the fact that attendance can swing from a few dozen to a much larger group in one week. The plan needed to allow for comfort without making the running cost unmanageable.

Site limits we had to work around

Stilfontein’s dry inland weather is one thing, but the real challenge was the hall itself. Large open rooms can lose cooling quickly, especially where doors stay open for deliveries or late arrivals. Power interruptions were also part of the picture, so the system needed sensible start-up settings and a layout that would not be hard to bring back online after load-shedding.

We also had to plan around the building finish and access points. A hall is not a neat little office. There are often fixed seating areas, high walls, community notices, and limited space for pipe routes. In a place like this, neat installation matters because it affects servicing later and keeps repairs simple. That saves time and money over the years, which is where most people feel the differnce.

  • Open-plan hall with variable occupancy
  • High heat load during busy events
  • Access needed for servicing without disrupting the venue
  • Power interruptions and restart planning

What we supplied and installed

We supplied larger wall split units sized for the hall’s cooling load and installed them in positions that spread air evenly across the room. The focus was on coverage, not just raw capacity. By placing the units carefully, we reduced hot spots near the entrance and at the far end of the hall where air usually struggles to reach.

Each unit was mounted, piped, pressure tested and fully commissioned. We checked drain fall, electrical connections, control functions and operating settings before handover. The installation was arranged so maintenance access would stay straightforward, with enough clearance for filter cleaning and future checks. The final system gave the hall a more even temperature right through the main seating area.

  • Larger wall split units for hall-sized cooling demand
  • Refrigerant piping and electrical connection
  • Pressure testing and system commissioning
  • Drain routing for reliable condensate removal

Project timeline and handover

The full job ran over two weeks from assessment to final handover. Week one covered the site assessment, cooling calculation and order confirmation. Week two covered delivery, installation and commissioning. That timeline worked well because the hall could keep operating around the work without losing function for long.

We also took time to explain basic operation to the hall team, including how to use the remote controls, when to clean filters, and what to do after a power cut. On community sites this matters. If the person on duty changes from week to week, the system must still be easy to run without calls flying back and forth after hours.

Results after the first busy events

After commissioning, the hall cooled down faster and held temperature better during packed events. People near the back were no longer getting a different experience to those near the front, and the room felt more settled when doors opened repeatedly. That makes a real difference in a public venue where comfort affects how long people stay and how the event is remembered.

The client also gained a cleaner operating setup. With the system sized properly from the start, there was less strain on the units and less need to force them to run flat out all the time. In practical terms, that helps with service life and makes the monthly electricity use easier to manage, especially in a town where many venues have to watch every Rand.

  • Faster pull-down time before events
  • More even cooling across the hall
  • Better comfort during full attendance periods
  • Lower strain on the equipment during normal use

What we would repeat on the next hall project

We would approach the next hall in almost the same way: measure the space properly, look at real attendance patterns, and allow for the way people use the building instead of only the floor area on paper. That approach avoids undersizing, which is the most common mistake in larger public rooms.

We would also keep access for servicing high on the list. In community buildings, equipment often has to work around events, committee meetings and cleaning schedules. A neat installation with sensible service access means fewer interruptions later. For a hall in Stilfontein or anywhere else in North West, that is the kind of planning that keeps the cooling useful long after the first season.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Why use larger wall split units in a hall?

They suit halls where the crowd size changes often and the cooling has to respond quickly without needing a complicated system.

Can a hall cooling system cope with load-shedding?

Yes, if it is correctly sized and commissioned. We also plan the restart settings and control use so recovery after an outage is straightforward.

Do you install in towns outside Mbombela?

Yes. We cover the Lowveld and North West, including places like Stilfontein, Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Rustenburg.
