Fault Finding

When an air-conditioner starts blowing warm air, trips a breaker or drips water inside, the fault is usually traceable with the right checks. Aircon Warehouse carries out fault finding for homes, shops and offices in Mbombela, the Lowveld and North West, with practical repairs suited to local conditions.

What Our Fault Finding Service Covers

Our fault finding service is for systems that are not cooling properly, making unusual noise, leaking water, icing up, short cycling, or tripping on start-up. We inspect wall split units, cassette units and portable aircons, then test the parts that commonly fail in South African conditions, especially where dust, humidity and load-shedding affect performance.

The aim is to identify the real cause before money is spent on parts that do not solve the problem. In many cases the fault is a blocked drain, dirty indoor coil, low gas charge, faulty capacitor, damaged cable, or a control issue between the indoor and outdoor units.

  • Cooling loss and weak airflow checks
  • Refrigerant leak detection and gas pressure testing
  • Drainage checks for blocked pipes and overflow
  • Electrical testing on breakers, capacitors, contactors and wiring
  • Indoor and outdoor unit cleaning where dirt is affecting operation

How We Diagnose the Problem On Site

We start with a proper discussion of the symptoms, when the fault began, and whether the unit has been serviced recently. Then our technician checks the installation, the power supply, the thermostat or controller, fan operation, pipe work and airflow. If needed, we measure operating temperatures and compare them with expected performance for the unit size.

For refrigeration faults, we check for signs of gas loss, oil staining, frost build-up and pressure imbalance. If there is an electrical issue, we test the supply voltage, isolator, connections and components in the control section. This helps avoid guesswork and keeps the repair process focused.

  • Visual inspection of indoor and outdoor equipment
  • Temperature and pressure readings where required
  • Electrical continuity and voltage checks
  • Drain pan and pipe fall inspection
  • Report on repair options before work proceeds

Common Faults We See In Mbombela And North West

In Mbombela, White River and Hazyview, we often find issues linked to humidity, blocked drains and clogged filters. In Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Rustenburg, dust and power interruptions can lead to electrical faults, board damage and worn components. Coastal corrosion is not the main concern here, but moisture and fine dust still cause trouble over time.

We also see systems that were installed with poor pipe routing, incorrect gas charge, undersized cabling or no proper isolation. Those problems do not always show up on day one, but they create repeated call outs later. A good fault finding visit helps separate an installation problem from a normal wear-and-tear issue.

  • Blocked condensate drains and water spill issues
  • Dirty filters, coils and fan sections
  • Low refrigerant from leaks or poor charging
  • Faulty motors, sensors, relays and capacitors
  • Breaker trips and unstable start-up after outages

Turnaround Times And What To Expect

For Mbombela and nearby areas such as White River and Hazyview, we aim for prompt scheduling and same week attendance where possible. For Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Rustenburg, timing depends on route planning and workload, but we keep the process clear so you know when to expect the technician. If a replacement part is needed, we will explain whether the unit can be repaired immediately or must be booked in.

Most basic faults can be identified during one visit. If the system has multiple issues or requires pressure testing over time, a follow-up may be needed. We do not rush a diagnosis, because a quick patch that fails after two days helps nobody.

  • Simple drainage or filter faults: often repaired on the same visit
  • Electrical faults: may need part replacement after testing
  • Leak-related faults: may need sealing, evacuation and recharging
  • Major compressor or board faults: quoted after inspection

How We Price Fault Finding And Repairs

Our pricing is based on the type of unit, the location, the complexity of the fault and whether specialist testing or parts are needed. We keep trade pricing practical and explain the difference between the call-out, the diagnosis and any repair work before continuing. That way there are no surprises once the unit is opened up.

If the fault is minor, such as a blocked drain or loose connection, the job can be costed simply. More complex faults may need a diagnostic fee plus a separate repair quote. If the aircon needs gas, we first confirm that the cause of loss has been found, because topping up without fixing the leak only leads to the same problem again.

We will always tell you what is worth repairing and what is better replaced, especially on older systems that are using power badly or needing repeated top-ups. In some cases a new unit is more economical than another temporary fix.

Keeping The Unit Reliable After The Repair

Once the fault is sorted, the best way to avoid repeat problems is scheduled servicing. For home units, a service every 6 to 12 months is usually enough, depending on dust, usage and how hard the system works in summer. For offices, retail spaces and guest accommodation, we recommend servicing every 3 to 6 months. Systems in kitchens, salons and busy commercial spaces often need closer attention.

Regular maintenance helps keep airflow strong, drainage clear and electrical parts in better condition. It also reduces nuisance trips during load-shedding recovery, which is when weak components often show up. If you notice a change in noise, odour, cooling speed or water leakage, do not wait until the unit stops completely.

  • Residential service interval: every 6 to 12 months
  • Commercial service interval: every 3 to 6 months
  • High dust or heavy use areas: more frequent checks may be needed
  • After a major fault: recheck within a short period if advised

What clients say

Questions we get asked

What is included in a fault finding visit?

We inspect the indoor and outdoor units, test power and controls, check for gas leaks, drainage problems and airflow issues, then explain what needs repair.

Can you fix the fault on the same day?

Often yes for drainage, filter and some electrical faults. If parts are needed, we will quote first and arrange the next step as quickly as possible.

Do you cover areas outside Mbombela?

Yes. We work in Mbombela and the Lowveld, plus Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Rustenburg in North West.
